Solo Voice and Piano 3 minutes Music by Shase Hernandez Text by Sara Teasdale
I Am Not Yours is the very first art song that I ever wrote. It holds a rather fond place in my heart as, at the time, song was not a way of musical expression that I had thought myself capable of. I had largely focused on ensemble or instrumental works but since that time I have found that the majority of works I have composed are songs. The poem was selected from a number of poems available to my colleagues and me during a course on writing art songs that was being taught by an amazing professor, Dr. Alan Shockley.
I Am Not Yours (1917)
Sara Teasdale (1884-1933)
I am not yours, not lost in you,
Not lost, although I long to be
Lost as a candle lit at noon,
Lost as a snowflake in the sea.
You love me, and I find you still
A spirit beautiful and bright,
Yet I am I, who long to be
Lost as a light is lost in light.
Oh plunge me deep in love—put out
My senses, leave me deaf and blind,
Swept by the tempest of your love,
A taper in a rushing wind.
